SEO Techniques:
Top traits of the greats

SEO techniques: Top traits of the greatsHaving a website isn’t enough. It has to paint an interesting, compelling picture for customers with good content, working links, the right keywords, and more in order for them to buy your products and services. That’s called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is important because 93 percent of people will learn about your business on search engines like Google, according to ImForza. If your website page ranks high in the search results, you’ll get more customers. After all, 86 percent of consumers rely on searches to make their buying decisions. Likewise, if your website doesn’t show up on page one of a search engine results page (SERP), then your competitors will get the business.

Tip: Optimizing your corporation’s website can be more cost-effective than you think. When done well, it increases traffic, creates brand awareness and attracts new customers, paying for itself. In fact, the close rate for SEO leads is a solid 14.6%. So, make sure your team of internal or external SEO experts stay up-to-date on the latest techniques and work smart so you can get the maximum results for your budget.

What’s the word? Keyword.

The first thing your SEO team should focus on are the words that people type into search engines. There are some free research tools that will tell them which words are most popular as well as recommend other words related to your products and services. After they’ve compiled a list and you’ve reviewed their strategy, have them optimize those keywords in your corporate website. Those keywords, along with your paid search advertising, will help drive organic customers to your company’s website. According to HubSpot, 64.6% of people will click on Google ads (paid advertising), when looking for something online, which is a great ROI.

Tip: Using the right keywords in optimization can make a world of difference to your organization’s online presence. Encourage your SEO team to fully research the words most relevant to your business and industry and don’t be afraid to let them think outside the box.

The key to success: Strategic placement of keywords

Once your team has the list of keywords, it’s vital they’re plugged into your corporate website in strategic places, including:

  • In URL of the company website. The words should be separated with hyphens instead of underscores.
  • Corporate content. The content should not just contain keywords, but actually be informative and interesting. In fact, 72% of marketers agree the most effective SEO tactic is relevant content.
  • Headings and subheadings, if it’s a natural fit.
  • In the meta descriptions of the website.

A picture’s worth a thousand words – and clicks

Images say it all. They add to the aesthetic and overall appeal to a company’s website. But pictures must also be made SEO friendly with these steps:

  • Reduce the file size so that the images and videos load quickly. Multiple studies show people click away from websites with loading times slower than six seconds.
  • Place keywords in the alt-text section of the image.
  • Use an image or graphic that compliments or explains the text.
  • Add a caption using keywords, if possible.

Other places for Keywords

While content is king for keywords, they can also be used in the design of the website to improve SEO. Consider placing keywords in title tags, meta keywords, meta descriptions, navigation, H1 tags, H2 tags, website slogans, bullet points, footer links, file names, internal links, folder names, etc. When you optimize those areas with keywords, you’ll see a big difference in brand traffic.

Other tips to optimize your website:

  • Make sure the company’s website can be accessed on all browsers (like Safari, Chrome, and Firefox), and is easy to navigate in order to rank high with search engines. Most importantly, the website needs to be mobile friendly.
  • Have your web team update content on a regular basis with the required word count. This keeps the website fresh for frequent visitors and plays a big role in improving SEO and ROI. While some like a clean, simple look on the homepage, Google recommends 250-300 words for each page. But if it takes more than that to convince the customer to buy and/or have a good user experience, then increase that number.
  • Pay attention to URL structure. That means include a keyword in the URL of every page. Also, to enhance readability, use a static URL address instead of a dynamic one.
  • Add credible, relevant backlinks.  Incoming links or backlinks are important to increase traffic to products and services. List your website with portals and web directories that are relevant to your niche and add a link back to your website. Links to your website can be also added to your articles, blog posts, testimonials etc.
  • Limit the use of JavaScript. While you need some of the computer programming language to create a friendly user experience, using too much JavaScript can drastically slow down websites. JavaScript also doesn’t work well with mobile devices.
  • Get social. Search engines love social media and your customers do too. Integrate social media into the company’s website design. Social media presence will help to rank the website higher in search engines.

When your SEO experts use these optimization techniques, the brand will be seen by more customers and help others find good information quickly.
